How to Translate a TikTok Video to English (Captions, Transcript, or Subtitles)

Three ways to translate a TikTok video to English: the in-app option, a full translated transcript from the link, or English SRT subtitles.

How to Translate a TikTok Video to English (Captions, Transcript, or Subtitles)

You found a TikTok in Spanish, Korean, Portuguese, Arabic, or another language, and you want to know exactly what's being said. TikTok has a built-in translate option, but it only works on some videos, it often translates only the caption text, and you can't copy or reuse the result easily.

This guide covers three ways to translate a TikTok video to English, from the in-app button to a full translated transcript or subtitle file you can actually work with.

Quick answer

  • Just want the gist? Use TikTok's own See translation option or the auto-captions translate setting, when available.
  • Need the full, accurate text? Paste the TikTok link into a transcription tool, get the transcript in the original language, then translate it to English.
  • Need English subtitles for a repost or edit (with permission)? Export the translated transcript as an SRT file.

Method 1: TikTok's built-in translation

TikTok can translate some content directly in the app:

  • Caption and comment text: tap See translation under the caption or a comment, when the option appears.
  • Auto-captions: if the creator turned on captions, you may see a translate option in the captions menu. Availability depends on the language, your region, and the app version.

This is fine for a quick read. The limits: it doesn't work on every video, spoken words are only translated when captions exist, you can't export the result, and slang or fast speech often comes out garbled.

Method 2: Paste the link and translate the transcript (most accurate)

When you need every word in English, such as for research, a reaction video, a news story, or to understand a tutorial, work from a transcript:

  1. Copy the video link: tap Share > Copy link in TikTok.
  2. Paste it into SkyScribe. You can also upload the video file if you saved it.
  3. Get the transcript in the original language, with timestamps.
  4. Translate the transcript to English.
  5. Read, copy, or export it.

Transcribing first and translating second gives better results than translating on the fly. The translator sees full sentences instead of fragments, and you can fix a misheard word in the original before it becomes a mistranslation. For the transcription step on its own, see how to transcribe a TikTok video to text.

Method 3: Create English subtitles (SRT)

If you're making a reaction, a compilation, or an educational breakdown, and you have the rights or the creator's permission to reuse the clip, English subtitles are often the goal:

  1. Follow Method 2 to get the original-language transcript.
  2. Check it against the video, especially names and on-screen terms.
  3. Translate to English.
  4. Export as an SRT file and import it into your editor or upload it with your video.

The subtitle translator can also translate an SRT you already have. More in how to translate an SRT file and TikTok captions to text or SRT.

Tips for better TikTok translations

  • Check slang and memes. Literal translations of trends, catchphrases, and song lyrics are often wrong. Add a short note in brackets when meaning matters.
  • Watch for background music. Loud music under speech lowers transcription accuracy. If one section is unclear, listen and correct it before translating.
  • Keep the timestamps. If you're quoting or reacting, timestamps let you match each English line to the right moment.
  • Short lines read better. For subtitles, keep each cue to one or two short lines so viewers can read them on a phone.
  • Respect the creator. Translating a video to understand it is fine. Reposting someone else's video with your subtitles needs their permission.

The same transcript-first approach works for other platforms:

FAQ

Can TikTok translate videos automatically? Sometimes. TikTok can translate captions and comments and, on some videos, auto-captions. It isn't available for every video, language, or region.

How do I translate a TikTok video that has no captions? Paste the link into a transcription tool to get the spoken words as text, then translate that transcript to English.

Can I translate a TikTok into languages other than English? Yes. Once you have the transcript, you can translate it into any supported language and export subtitles for each one.

Is it free to translate a TikTok video? TikTok's built-in options are free. Transcription tools usually offer a free tier or trial so you can test a video before paying.

Can I download the translated captions? Not from TikTok itself. With a transcript you can export the English version as plain text or as an SRT or VTT subtitle file.
