How to Extract Audio From Instagram Reels (iPhone, Android, and Desktop)

How to get audio out of Instagram Reels on iPhone, Android, and desktop: save sounds in-app, extract audio from your own Reels, or get a transcript from the link.

How to Extract Audio From Instagram Reels (iPhone, Android, and Desktop)

You heard a great voiceover, a quote, a podcast clip, or a sound you want to remember on Instagram Reels. Instagram lets you reuse sounds inside the app, but it doesn't give you an MP3 download button. So how do you actually get the audio, or the words in it, out of a Reel?

This guide shows practical ways to extract audio from Instagram Reels on iPhone, Android, and desktop, plus the faster option when what you really need is the text of what was said.

Quick answer

  • To reuse a sound in your own Reel: tap the audio name at the bottom of the Reel, then Save audio or Use audio. It stays inside Instagram.
  • To get an audio file from your own Reel: download the Reel from your profile, then extract the audio from the video file on your phone or computer.
  • To get the words (quotes, captions, notes): copy the Reel link and paste it into SkyScribe to get a transcript. No audio file needed.

First, decide what you actually need

People search for "Instagram Reel to MP3" for very different reasons:

  • You want the sound for your own Reel. Instagram's built-in audio tools are the right choice.
  • You want an audio file of your own content to repurpose as a podcast clip, voice note, or backup.
  • You want what was said, such as a quote, a recipe, a tip, or a script. A transcript gets you there faster and is easier to search and edit than an audio file.

Pick the matching method below.

Method 1: Save or reuse a Reel's sound inside Instagram

This keeps everything in the app and respects the original creator.

  1. Open the Reel.
  2. Tap the audio name at the bottom of the screen.
  3. Tap Save audio to keep it in your saved items, or Use audio to start a new Reel with that sound.

Saved audio appears in your Saved collection under Audio. You can't export it as a file, but it's the quickest way to reuse trending sounds legitimately.

Method 2: Extract audio from your own Reel

If it's your Reel, you can download the video and pull the audio out of it.

Step 1: Download your Reel

  1. Open the Reel on your profile.
  2. Tap the three-dot menu.
  3. Look for Download or Save to camera roll (the wording varies by app version and account type).

If you posted with licensed music, Instagram may save the video without that music. Your own voiceover and original audio are kept.

Step 2: Extract the audio (iPhone)

Once the video is in Photos, you can turn it into an audio file without extra apps. Our step-by-step guide covers the fastest built-in methods: how to extract audio from a video on iPhone. For a shorter version, see extract audio from iPhone video.

Step 2: Extract the audio (Android)

Android options depend on your phone, but most work the same way: open the video in an editor or audio app that can export audio only, then save it as MP3 or M4A. Full walkthrough: how to extract audio from video on Android.

Step 2: Extract the audio (computer)

Transfer the video to your computer, then:

Method 3: Get the words from any Reel with a transcript

Most of the time, people extract audio from a Reel because they want what was said: a quote for a post, a recipe, a workout cue, a business tip, or a script to study. Turning that audio into text is the faster route.

  1. Open the Reel and tap the share (paper plane) icon, then Copy link.
  2. Paste the link into SkyScribe in any browser.
  3. Get a transcript of the Reel's speech, with timestamps.
  4. Copy the text, search it, translate it, or export captions.

Why this is often better than an MP3:

  • You can search and quote it. Audio files can't be skimmed. Text can.
  • Nothing to store. No files clogging up your camera roll.
  • Ready for captions. Turn the transcript into subtitles. See Instagram Reel to SRT captions and how to add captions to Instagram Reels.
  • Easy to translate. Translate the text into another language without re-recording anything.

What about "Instagram Reel to MP3" downloader sites?

Third-party downloader sites and apps promise one-tap MP3s, but they come with real downsides:

  • Heavy ads, pop-ups, and fake download buttons.
  • Requests to log in with your Instagram account, which can put your account at risk.
  • They break often when Instagram changes its site.
  • Downloading other people's content may break Instagram's terms or the creator's copyright.

If you only need the words, a transcript avoids all of this. If you need audio, stick to your own Reels or ask the creator for the original file.

Is it legal to extract audio from Instagram Reels?

Extracting audio from your own Reels is fine. Using Instagram's Use audio feature is fine because it's built for that purpose. Downloading and reusing someone else's audio outside Instagram, especially commercially, may infringe their copyright or Instagram's terms. Quoting short excerpts from a transcript for commentary, research, or notes is generally much lower risk, but credit the creator.

FAQ

Can I download the audio of an Instagram Reel as an MP3? Instagram doesn't offer an MP3 download. You can save sounds inside the app, or download your own Reel and extract the audio from the video file.

How do I get the text from an Instagram Reel? Copy the Reel link from the share menu and paste it into SkyScribe. You'll get a transcript of the speech you can copy, search, or turn into captions.

Why is the music missing from my downloaded Reel? When a Reel uses licensed music from Instagram's library, Instagram may remove that track from the downloaded file. Original audio and voiceovers usually remain.

Does this work for TikTok and YouTube Shorts too? Yes. See how to transcribe a TikTok video to text and YouTube Shorts transcript.
